Techniques

Almost all of the images here combine several different techniques.

They begin as photographs; I then alter composition, content, colour and sometimes additional factors such as perspective using imaging software until the result approaches what I am striving for.

This photograph may then be used as the basis for a drawing, or for a printmaking technique. Shown on this website are a variety including intaglio (eg drypoint, etching, collagraph), relief (woodblock and linocut) and planographic (screenprint and stone lithography). Many of my works are transfer monoprints.

The finished print may be hand coloured, or is often scanned or photographed and recombined with the original image using digital imaging software to create the final result. Drawings are hand coloured using inks or pastels. In some work other factors such as collaged elements or metal foils are added.

Most of the prints here are 'monoprints' meaning they exist as a unique work that is not reproducible. Digital monoprints are printed once from the final file, which is then deleted in the same way that a traditional printing block would be destroyed. Limited editions are never greater than twenty.
